ISAGD: Improving Support for Families after Gestational Diabetes

ISAGD (Improving Support for Families after Gestational Diabetes) is a new study that explores families’ experiences of managing healthy eating and exercise in the postnatal period after gestational diabetes.

ISAGD aims

  • To explore the experiences of women with Gestational Diabetes and their partners during the postpartum period (3 to 24 months)

  • To explore the family dynamics associated with health behaviour changes, as well as enrolment and engagement in the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.

  • To identify barriers and facilitators to engagement with health behaviour changes from a family systems perspective.

Research questions

  • What are parents’ perceptions of risk, roles and responsibilities after a GD diagnosis, and what are the similarities and differences between them?

  • How do differences in the perceptions of risk, roles and responsibilities and postpartum family dynamics explain engagement with the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme or independent health behaviour change?

Using online interviews with both parents, ISAGD will generate insights into families’ needs to inform the development of new interventions and improve support for families after gestational diabetes.
