Exploring industry perspectives on ultra-processed food policy

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) make up a substantial part of diets in the United Kingdom (UK) and there is increasing interest in how policies might support healthier dietary patterns.

This study is part of a wider NIHR-funded research programme examining potential policy approaches to reduce UPF consumption in the UK. As part of this work, we are inviting individuals working in the UPF industry to share their perspectives on current policy discussions and possible future developments.

We are particularly interested in understanding how people in strategic roles within food companies view potential policy actions related to UPFs, as well as how organisations may respond to these developments.

The insights shared will contribute to research aimed at informing balanced, practical and effective approaches to food policy.

Who can take part?

You may be eligible if you currently work, or have worked within the past 24 months, in a strategic role within a large food company producing ultra-processed foods and operating in the UK.

Relevant roles may include:

Corporate strategy, policy, regulatory affairs, public affairs, research and development, nutrition, health and wellbeing, commercial functions, or senior management.

What would taking part involve?

Taking part will usually involve two stages:

  1. Short background call
You will be invited to take part in a brief introductory call (around 5 minutes). This is an informal opportunity to introduce the study, answer any initial questions and understand whether your experience is relevant to the research. This call is not recorded and does not form part of the research data.

  2. Full interview
If you are eligible and interested in taking part, you will be invited to a one-to-one interview with a researcher. This can take place online via Microsoft Teams or in person at a time and location convenient to you.

The interview will last around 30 minutes and will explore your professional perspectives on:

  • Current and potential policy developments related to ultra-processed foods

  • How organisations may respond to these developments

  • Broader considerations shaping decision-making within the sector

With your consent, the interview will be audio-recorded and professionally transcribed. All information will be treated confidentially, and transcripts will be anonymised before analysis.

Why take part?

Taking part offers an opportunity to:

  • Share your professional insights in an independent academic study

  • Contribute to research that aims to inform future policy discussions

  • Ensure industry perspectives are represented in evidence used by policymakers
